The Plastic Cycle
On average, each Vietnamese citizen disposes of approximately 62kg of plastic waste per year, totaling about 6.2 million tons nationwide. The majority of this waste is either buried or incinerated with only a fraction being sorted for recycling. The Vietnamese government has recently taken robust measures to combat plastic waste pollution. However, due to limited resources, Vietnam greatly needs the collective efforts of the private sector and international organizations
To address this pollution issue, VietCycle and the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) are collaborating on the implementation of “The Plastic Cycle” project from December 2022 to August 2023. This marks the beginning of our joint efforts to implement a Circular Solution in Vietnam.
Informal waste workers collects from the streets and people’s houses and brings them to collection points (junk shop).
Waste is then taken to sorting stations for more accurate classification and baling.
Baled plastic waste is transferred to recycling plants.
Every month, the project supports the informal waste worker team for rent, health insurance and personal protective equipment. Thereby, we hope to somewhat improve the life and health of this special team.
